The first Carnival festival in Rio took place in 17 23. It was called the Carnival of Brazil and was plagued with violence, as well as being plagued by swindlers. This carnival is a big deal for Brazilians, and they take great pride in this celebrations. The city basically stays shut down during this period.

Carnival games, parades, and events are a big deal for the residents of Rio de Janeiro. This is the most popular time for tourists to visit the city, as everyone is busy taking in the Carnival madness. Some of the parades that take place include the Parade of Nations, or the Parade of Light. Carnival World is the name of the world's largest and longest parades during this Carnival Rio de Janeiro.

The festivities began on a Friday night, when all shops were closed, and ended on a Sunday afternoon, when shop owners began opening their shops once again.
